<p>
This is the status of the Gentoo Documentation Project. It will be posted
regularly, but not with a static frequency. All questions can be posted to
<mail link="gentoo-doc@gentoo.org">gentoo-doc@gentoo.org</mail> or to
<mail link="swift@gentoo.org">me</mail> personally.
</p>

<p>
The Gentoo Documentation Project, from now on abbreviated to GDP, has its own
project page (just like almost all other Gentoo projects). You can find it at
<uri>http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/gdp</uri>.

<title>Gentoo Handbook part III</title>
<section>
<body>

<p>
The third part of the Gentoo Handbook is progressing slowly. Currently, we have
the following chapters ready:
</p>

<ul>
  <li>
    <uri link="/doc/en/handbook/draft/desktop.xml?part=1&amp;chap=1">
      The X Server
    </uri>, which covers installation and configuration of the Xorg X Server
  </li>
  <li>
    <uri link="/doc/en/handbook/draft/desktop.xml?part=1&amp;chap=2">
      The K Desktop Environment
    </uri> in which you learn how to install and configure KDE
  </li>
  <li>
    <uri link="/doc/en/handbook/draft/desktop.xml?part=1&amp;chap=3">
      The GNOME Environment
    </uri> in which you learn how to install and configure GNOME
  </li>
  <li>
    <uri link="/doc/en/handbook/draft/desktop.xml?part=1&amp;chap=4">
      The various Window Managers
    </uri> which contains tips and tricks for Fluxbox, OpenBox and is open for
    suggestions regarding other window managers :)
  </li>
  <li>
    <uri link="/doc/en/handbook/draft/desktop.xml?part=1&amp;chap=5">
      Getting Sound to Work
    </uri>, an improved version of our <uri link="/doc/en/alsa-guide.xml">ALSA
    Guide</uri>
  </li>
  <li>
    <uri link="/doc/en/handbook/draft/desktop.xml?part=1&amp;chap=6">
      What about 3D Acceleration
    </uri> which is the migration of our <uri link="/doc/en/dri-howto.xml">DRI
    Howto</uri> into the Gentoo Handbook
  </li>
</ul>

<p>
The only chapter remaining is called <uri
link="/doc/en/handbook/draft/desktop.xml?part=1&amp;chap=7">Integrating in a
Network</uri> and should focus on how users can integrate their Gentoo system in
a Windows environment, providing interoptability using SAMBA.
</p>

<p>
The main idea is to release this third part as "official" (after a few QA
measures) and add additional chapters when deemed appropriate. This because we
don't want to keep the documentation hidden from the users, while we know that
there are still many subjects regarding desktop configuration that aren't
covered yet.
